Yes, it’s a50mm one too…

Rouslan Chimeea

Hola!

I got my camera, my mum’s old Canon 60D, in April 2014, which, for no obvious reason than zero-interest, I did not use until December 2016 when I suddenly became interested in photography. I was always fond of going through photos, scrutinizing them, stunned at the level of details and wondering how somebody captured that moment and always wanted to be able to do the same but never did anything more than, well…want it. So once I made the decision to pick up the camera, I was eager to get a good understanding of it, how to use it, aaaand, how to get those sweet shots that we all see online; landscape, close-up (macro), food, street or just any random stuff.

I was also caught up in the belief that gear was what defined your photos, how they will look on your camera or laptop. Since, I have gone through hours of YouTube videos. Note to myself, I should probably use “days” here, probably even “weeks” when all these hours are added up. Same goes for articles but I’m not gonna brag about reading an encyclopedia about photography, although I may have that amount saved up in bookmarks, probably to ‘read them in the near future’….said no one ever.

All that is fine and charming, but the real ‘aha!’ moment happened the day I stumbled across one of my procrastinarticles (see the word game there? *proud*) from DPS about all the possibilities of the 50mm lens. It praised the the 50mm for various reasons, and rightly so:

  • Value – It comes at $125 here (I use Canon)

  • Versatility

  • Features

  • Image Quality

  • Guide

The last reason is the main reason for this blog. The 50mm is a great guide, period.

The 50mm lens has, and still does, taught me how to see the world through it. As a beginner, and far from considering myself as a particularly gifted artist, I want to develop a photographer’s eye, the third eye if you will (and no it’s not to see through your clothes or closed shower doors, in case you were wondering). I wanted to understand how the people behind those amazing online photos viewed the world. Do they see this tree as I see it? Do they walk in the streets and see things the way I do? Do they look at something, picture a scene and try to capture it? Or do they try to look at everything around them from a different angle to make it look better?

Learning to view the world through a 50mm lens is a journey and there is only one way to go about it to enjoy it; practice, patience, repeat.

With this single lens you can give a try to different niches of photography, which is precisely what this blog is about. Every week I will be posting a photo and telling you the story behind it, where I will be attempting to mix different aspects of photography that are non-gear-related (or minimally at least); the set-up, context, idea, meaning & specific type of photography.

Happy Shooting!
